I was pretty lazy and didn't upgrade my Nokia 770 until last night, but finding the instructions for doing it under Linux are a pain. So here you go.

First off we need to backup our settings as flashing new firmware will erase all of our preferences. Just go to control panel -> backup/restore and backup.

Next we need to download the flasher-2.0 tool as the previous ones will not work with the new 2006 edition. The new flasher version is available from:
http://maemo.org/downloads/d3.php

To download the firmware image you will need the mac address on your device. This is available under the battery on the underside or from on the box. The link is:
http://www.maemo.org/downloads/nokia_770

Now turn off your 770 and disconnect the charger. Plug in the usb cable to your computer, and run the following as root:
# ./flasher-2.0 -F SU-18_2006SE_1.2006.26-8_PR_F5_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R
Now power the device on while holding down the home button. The device will flash and reset. When it's done, it will run through its usual device setup, and then you can go to control panel->backup/restore to restore your original settings.

One of the greatest improvements is the use of the debian apt tools and repositories. You can ssh in and modify /etc/apt/sources.list or use tools->application manager. A repository list is available at:

These instructions are available in more terse form at:
