Key Characters:
Michael (Scavenger man)
Abi (Sheriff / Leader)
Lord Founder (Leader of Newbegin city)

Overview:
I was fortunate enough to get copies of the first six issues from Oni Press which publishes this post apocalyptic comic, and I have to say it's great story. The tag line is "One hundred years after the big wet, somewhere in America..." We start with our protagonist wandering through the aptly named Wasteland and the story continues from there. Not much is left it seems, but there are small towns and cities.
The Story:
"Long ago, man was foolish and proud, and the people of A-Ree-Yass-I were the most foolish of all. They spurned Mother Sun and Father Moon, hiding from them inside great metal boxes." ... "So the children cried out and the tears of their weeping swept over the earth. And it was called the Big Wet" ... The Sun said "I shall Give you life, but not as you knew it. I have taken the clouds, so that my sight upon you may never be obscured. I have taken the birds, so that I may hear every word you speak. I have destroyed your cities, so that you may not hide from me as you once did. And I have taken the heavens, so that you may not see them. I have poisoned the oceans, so that you may not taste their fruit. And this is the way of things, until you are redeemed in our eyes."

The desert is filled with "sandies" which are like star wars sand people. Unfortunately after getting into a fight with them and going into a small town, our protagonist (Michael) brings the wrath of a large group of Sandies which destroy the town and kill many of it's residents in the ensuing battle. From here the Sheriff gathers up his remaining people, and heads for Newbegin city. He even gets the loner Michael to go along.

There is also an earth based religious order, which is where the Mother and Father story came from, that dominates the wasteland and Newbegin city as well. Lord founder calls them heathens, but they go by the term "sunners". He has a bit of a problem with them not following his religion, but more is explained in the first few books.
The Rating:
The storyline is slow to build, but gets a lot better as it goes along. I can see many possibilities for the storylines available, especially with the fabled city "A-Ree-Yass-I" which they keep bringing up. I give this comic an 8 out of 10, and I have my local comic store hold this for me when it comes in every month now. It's the only comic I buy.

Issue #1 is also available for free download.

Hey Quietearth,
I just saw this on the scifi.com website. New Line has just picked up the rights to make a movie about the video game. I have played and seen Gears of War and its set in a post-apocalyptic world that was decimeted by aliens. If the movie is true to Gears of War it maybe pretty good and another chalk up for the post-apocalyptic genre. Heres the link and i'm pasteing the report here.

New Line Grinds Gears Of War
New Line has won feature rights to Microsoft's hugely popular video game Gears of War, with Stuart Beattie writing and Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey producing via their Temple Hill banner, Variety reported.
CAA conducted the auction, which featured a 21-page treatment by Beattie (Collateral).
Gears has sold more than three million units and is hugely popular on Microsoft's Xbox Live service, which allows players to compete against each other online.
The game is set in a world reeling from an invasion by aliens known as the Locust. A small group of elite soldiers, including the main character, Marcus Fennix, who is rescued from prison at the beginning of the game, fight to retake the planet Sera for its surviving humans.
