Some SDCC tidbits from the I am Legend panel:
- The new film will not have any nods/winks to the 2 previous incarnations: Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth.
- The creatures in the films are allergic to sunlight and crave blood. They are never referred to as vampires in the film. This makes it closer to the book.
- Matheson's son says his father already saw the film and he said it was "1st class!". That makes me think this won't be Hollywood tripe, sweet!
There was alot on the upcoming comic, Awakening Part II by Steve Niles and some pages of the comic were shown which included a village in South Africa being contained as to the vamp infenction by people in gas masks with some big guns. Steve Niles had adapted the book for a four-volume graphic novel more than a decade ago because he was deeply affected by the I Am Legend book as a kid. When he was 19 years old he approached Richard Matheson with the idea and Matheson let Niles do it for 100 bucks.
The comic is a prequel to the film, exploring the events that bring us to the apocalypse. It's also part of the actualy story for the film, and focuses on a family that is stuck in traffic during rush hour when the epidemic breaks out.

I thought the movie was 1st class as well, but it derailed alot from Matheson's original concept of vampires, for example, the film butchered the significance of the title. In the book, Neville was the "legend" to the vampires because he came out at day, which was their night, and killed vampires. The movie completley changed that. I think the movie would've been much much better if it had followed the books storyline. Overall, however, the film was indeed very good.
