This is going to be a remake, and it looks like it will be on the BBC as Powerhouse, who is backing this 4 hour mini-series, is a European tv and movie producer. This is based on the novel of the same name by John Wyndham and will be written by Patrick Harbinson of ER and Law & Order fame.
Synopsis:
"The Human race has had its day. It's 2011 and man has created a substitute for fossil fuel by breeding a highly dangerous crop of plants upon which they rely for fuel and energy. When the human race is threatened by a near fatal meteor shower, the event also has a devastating effect on the Triffids - the creatures mutate and turn against mankind to take over the world. A select few fight to save themselves in what could be the last days of humankind."
