This one had a serious case of over promotion, why you ask? Because it was done by the controversial filmmaker, Uwe Boll, who flew in from Germany to watch the movie with us and do a Q&A. But it doesn't stop there, oh no, it continues with a tale of Uwe boxing 4 of his critics in Vancouver last year, and after the movie they showed 5 minutes from a documentary that's being made of it. More about this after I tell you about the movie.
This is a fantasy epic, and I'll tell you it's curiously similar to Lord of the Rings. It has a huge crew of stars in the film, Jason Statham as the hero Farmer, Matthew Lillard (shaggy) as the treacherous Duke, Burt Reynolds as the King (everyone laughed when he appeared on screen) and Ray Liotta as the bad guy. Seriously the list goes on and on but this left a bad taste in my mouth, a very hollywood taste. Throughout the entire movie people were laughing and I couldn't tell if it was in a mocking manner or if they actually thought something was funny, sometimes at points which clearly made no sense. It really did have some cheesy hollywood formulaic stuff in it, that definitely got laughs because this isn't the kind of audience that goes for hollywood's crap (luckily neither do I).
Back to the movie, the King's daughter is seeing the bad guy, the Duke is plotting to overthrow the King with the bad guy. Farmer is happy with his life, his wife and son, and these "orc" creatures called Krugs come and destroy the town, kill people, and kidnap his wife. Turns out Farmer is a real tough guy, oh I forgot to mention Ron Perlman plays his friend Norick, and they go after his wife. Meanwhile King Pimp, that's Burt Reynolds, is planning to fight, and he's a good King, not a womanizer or anything (haha just a joke), so he rallies the troops and then there's this whole magical fantastical storyline with royal bloodlines, major battles and magic. The movie was too long, in fact Uwe said afterwards that Statham thought it was 20 minutes too long, upon which Boll said "This isn't Transporter 3" which got plenty of laughs. Then there was the credits, which went on forever, I think they listed everyone's 6th cousin that worked on the film. This gets a 5 out of 10, I don't like fantasy and I would never see this movie, star power or not, but then again I didn't like Lord of the Rings so you might find it more to your liking. The movie drops January 11th.
Now we can get to the interesting stuff, "The Manoeuvre in Vancouver" which is a documentary Rue Morgue is working on which showcases Uwe boxing 4 of his biggest critics. Apparently he put out a list of like 40 people, and one of the guys that responded was Chris Alexander from Rue Morgue who ran the Q&A with Uwe. The little trailer for this documentary was about 5 minutes long, and starts off with Uwe saying how "80% of hollywood rips stuff from other people", well I would think that number is actually higher. So far so good. Then it shows Chris and Boll talking smack, some clips of boxing, and it should be mentioned Boll was an amateur boxer and Chris is skinny like a pole. Anyways we got no results of the fights, no rules, no round count. Were there any undercards? Geez I love boxing but they didn't give us anything! So this was a severe dissapointment.
Onto the Q&A, Chris is a bit nervous it seems, and while funny it's pretty clear he lost the bout, although he did say he went 2 rounds. Chris did ask about the obvious comparison to Lord of the Rings to which Uwe responded this was a "braveheart meets fantasy" style movie. He was also gracious and threw in a bit of vitriol against "western retards" and "fundamentalists", endearing him to me all the more (that was sarcasm).

I would like to know what the original name of the book that the movie came from, and who was the author.
Thank You

hey Kent- it is based off a video game (Dungeon Siege), not a book
