Did someone say John Woo? I'm in! Based on the Han Dynasty (3rd century) novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," which also is the basis for the upcoming "The Three Kingdoms", the film was initially funded at $50 million, then grew to $75M, and it kept going. Reports are that the film is now being split into two 2 hour pieces for eastern viewers, and us occidentals will get only a combined 2.5 hour version (like I'm not going to get the original). IT marks John Woo's return to native-language Chinese film after a run in Hollywood, and this promises to be nothing less then spectacular. Chow-Yun Fat was originally skedded to star, but after dropping out was replaced by Tony Leung Chiu Wai (Lust Caution, 2046, Hero). This is also of great political significance to the Chinese government as they want to see this succeed ahead of the upcoming Olympics. The film is looking like a release sometime around October at the end of this year, so check after the break for the trailer and synopsis! It promises to be an epic with massive battles!

"In 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minster Cao convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister, himself.


Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Xu and East Wu formed an unlikely alliance. Numerous battles of strength and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually culminating in the battle of Red Cliff. During the battle, two thousand ships were burned, and the course of Chinese history was changed forever."
