Based on the true story of Captain Gu Zid during the Chinese Civil War, Assembly is being called China's Saving Private Ryan. Apparently the film was shot as such that the beginning starts in almost black and white, with occasional flashes of red and yellow, and color slowly seeps in as it progresses. Helmed by Feng Xiaogang who served 8 years in the military, Assembly is described as fiercely patriotic, but while also seemingly tiptoeing into the thought of freedom of speech.
