Okay, so it's no secret that we don't usually dig on Disney around here but something happens to my brain when I hear the words "Philip K. Dick" and "movie" in the same sentence and I can't help but be filled with feelings of equal parts excitement and anxiety. For instance, a couple of days ago I read on the official Philip K. Dick site that the acclaimed animation studio had skedded a feature film adaptation of PKD's short story King of the Elves for 2012 and the first thing I thought was "cool" followed closely by "my god, the Mayan's called it! 2012 is the year of the apocalypse!"

Because, to be honest, I really can't see how this production is in any way necessary, and I highly doubt it'll reflect PKD's attitudes or ideas. The original story, which is only about 15 pages long, is so simple and similar to countless other fantasy setups that Disney could have just as easily written their own story of an everyman who becomes an unlikely hero when he finds out he's something special. Why bring Mr. Dick into it? I mean, will there be songs and comedic sidekicks? Will Shadrach Jones burst into dance when he uncovers the true identity of the Goblin King? Proceed with caution Disney, you are walking on hallowed ground.
