As utterly baffling as it is visually strange there's no question that Carl Theodore Dreyer's Vampyr has become what you might call a film student's vampire movie. In fact that's where I first watched it, in an experimental film class in University. Was it as powerful as his Joan of Arc, or as humanely devastating as Ordet? Well no, but there is no question of it's historical influence on how horror is constructed visually today. And when you get the chance to see it on a Criterion Collection set with commentaries by film scholars who can perhaps shed even more perspective on its history and relevance, well you just shut up and rent it. Check out the clip embedded after the break to see an example of how visually stunning and yet completely surreal this film can get.
