Feels like I've been reading a lot about "nostalgia" recently. In fact now that Hollywood has fully embraced this notion of remaking all of the best genre films from the seventies and eighties it seems to be getting harder for everyone to separate true film criticism from just trying to reconcile the inevitable disappointments that arise from desiring to see gown up versions of the films that shaped our childhood and then finding out that they're not at all for us, but for a whole new generation of young kids. Well, now with this Death Race redux on the horizon, I have a feeling its going to be my turn. See, the original Death Race 2000 was pretty instrumental in terms of determining what films I sought out after watching it at a very young age. Not only was it post-apocalyptic and dystopic, but it managed to blend scifi, satire, sex, and violence in a way that I'd never seen before. It truly became the litmus of how adventurous I felt films should be. Of course I eventually I grew up, saw more films, and began to see Death Race 2000 for what it had aged into; a campy relic from a bygone era that, perhaps through sheer strangeness had managed to hold onto its cult cred.
But, as it turns out, I might end up being one of the lucky ones. See, in the new issue of Empire Magazine, one of the first articles on the making of Death Race has appeared and it more than hints that the new version by Paul W.S. Anderson will be as grown up as I think I am. Of course Jason Statham's in it who, while I find him charming, is still turning into a white Will Smith what with all his snappy one -liners and "oh no you didn'ts" (but maybe that's a conversation for another time). Even some early reviews back in April told of a Death Race that didn't hold back in the violence department. Also, I must say I'm rather impressed with the overloaded Mad Max look of the vehicles pictured below.
Maybe my inner child needs a slap, but I'm sorta looking forward to seeing this in August.

easy to see why they're doing this, since the Rollerball remake was such a blockbuster.
quietearth (3 years ago) Reply
that rollerball remake sucked.. nothing beats 70s scifi!

NO WAI! ROLLERBALL SUCKED?!?

I really liked the concept of 'Maybe my inner child needs a slap', nice one mind if I blatently steal it.
