As some of you may know, Quiet Earth had the grave misfortune of being MIA this week due to a massive fire in our datacenter that took over 9000 clients offline for over 90 hours (!). Do you know how much awesome news you miss in 90 hours? How many productions get announced, trailers get released, and posters hit the net? Hence this week's extra long edition of MPD, which will attempt to bring you up to speed on all the cool stuff that made us rub our hands together and say "excellent." So let's get things started shall we. First off, there was some development in the ongoing English production of The Yellow M. Madrid based company Tornasol Films has now joined forces with La Fabrique de Films to help Alex de la Iglesia (Oxford Murders) bring the popular French comic to the screen. Then of course there was this bit of news that CineTel Films would be remaking the 70s feminist revenge classic I Spit On Your Grave for theatrical release. Of course we call it a "classic" now because in retrospect we can see how it spearheaded a whole slew of similar exploitive revenge pics, but at the time of its release it was easily one of the most reviled films in history. The Brown Bunny of '78 we'll say. Much much more news after the break.

Some details emerged this week about when we can all finally see the Crispin Glover starring remake of Herschell Gordon Lewis' cult classic The Wizard of Gore. It seems that Dimension Extreme plans to drop the film directly into the direct to DVD dungeon on August 19th. No details yet on special features though.


On the zombie front, American Pie/Final Destination producer Warren Zide has scooped up a spec script by Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit called Harvard Zombie Massacre. Sounds like it's got the tone of a zomedy. Also, Zack Snyder has hired feature newcomer Matthijs van Heijningen to direct Army of the Dead, a Zombie film based on his own original idea. Matthijs van Heijningen's claim to fame right now is commercials but with Snyder running rough shot as producer his life of a feature director seems pretty set in stone.

Of course the big news yesterday came on the heels of Ridley Scott's comments that he would be working on a scifi picture for his next project. Well after loads of speculation as to what that would be there are a lot of people saying that it's probably Aldous Huxley’s 1932 dystopian classic Brave New World. And of course now that this has come to light I can remember reading about this a long time ago. If its true, this makes Agent Orange very happy.

There were also some interesting updates in the world of Asian cinema this week . We found out that telco giant DoCoMo and Nippon Television Network have joined forces to bring the popular apocalyptic Manga comic MW to life. Hiroshi Tamaki will star as an elite banker who survives a murderous military cover-up of a fatal poison gas leak on a remote island. He plots to use the gas, called MW, to take revenge on its developers -- the U.S. and Japanese militaries -- and destroy the world.
