Anyone who's read Neal Stephenson knows how impossible it is to categorize the author's work into neat labels. He's dabbled in Cyberpunk with "Snowcrash," science fiction with "The Diamond Age," and even created all new kinds of fiction with his massive historical adventure "The Baroque Cycle." His books are some of my personal favorites so I'm thrilled to report that "Anathem," his new novel that is set for publication in September, looks to be post-apocalyptic - though not like you'd expect. Some early reviews of the novel have been trickling out and I must say that I'm very intrigued. One writer even called it "a genre bending alt-future-retro world where mechani-punk technology meets space opera." Sounds like my dream book. But anyway, The novel is set in a post apocalyptic future, wherein the protagonist, Raz, is among a cohort of secluded scientists, philosophers and mathematicians who are called upon to save the world from impending catastrophe. In true Stephenson form it sounds intensly smart and totally rad. Bring on September!
