Now that the buzz from E3 has died down somewhat, it seems that there's quite a few apocalypse-themed video games in development. Some of them are almost ready to be released, so here's a preview of a few few upcoming titles that will be reviewed here in the coming months. It's all after the break.
Dead Space
Developer and Publisher: Electronic Arts
Release: October 31st 2008
Platforms: PS3, XBOX 360, PC
Action/First-Person Shooter with strategic dismemberment- I'm SOOO there! Since this is coming from EA, and I think they'll give it enough attention to make it ass-kicking. I think it will be extremely fun, what with the strategic dismemberment as a bullet point. I wonder if it will feature tactical disembowelments, but I'm kind of doubting it.

Dead Island
Developer: TechLand
Publisher: Unknown
Release: Unknown
Platforms: PS3, XBOX 360, PC
You're a tourist on a tropical island in the middle of your vacation, then everyone starts turning into a zombie. YAAAH!! The whole island is open to exploration and devastation. Supposedly it's more than FarCry with undead but it looks like a whole lot of fun to me. I'll look for an infinite ammo cheat the first day it's out! It uses multilayer effects to apply the damage to models. Can you fillet the undead in this title? We'll see. The street date is unknown right now, so I'm glad they've taken a "release it when it's done" approach. It's been in development for several years, and I get a feeling they won't screw it up.

Left 4 Dead
Developer: Valve
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Release: October 18 2008
Platforms: PC
Multiplayer cooperative survival against zombies. This uses the Half-Life 2 Source Engine, so you know that when the zombies get blown apart, all the chunks react correctly in the environment. That's important to me. Violence without consequence is not only phony, it's boring. Left 4 Dead will be a hearty meal indeed:

Fallout 3
Developers: Pandemic and Bethesda Software
Publisher: THQ
Release: Fall 2008
Platforms: PS3, XBOX 360, PC
This is a 500 lbs. gorilla that I will personally tackle. If you've played the previous Fallouts, then you're in for a treat, because everything looks like 3D versions of the Black Isle art of the first two games. Here's the trailer:
Here's some video from the E3 presentation:

Sweet. Thanks for the rundown anglebender. I'll become a gamer yet if PA games like these keep rollin' out.
