As part of the upcoming celebration of the 100th anniversary of Akira Kurosawa's birth, the last screenplay ever written by the legendary Japanese filmmaker is getting pushed into production though a partnership of Kurosawa Production and Lotus, Lexicon Film Entertainment, Harbor Light Entertainment, and Singapore's Upside Down Entertainment. The Masque of the Black Death, itself a play on Edgar Allen Poe's short story The Masque of the Red Death, is being developed as an Anime feature according to the Anime News Network. However, instead of taking place in the 18th century, Kurosawa's Masque resets the setting to a fictional version of Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, when most of humanity faces a deadly contagion. The suspense story deals with the human condition when people are pushed to extremes and despair. So, it sounds like the film will retain the original story's focus on a devastating plague which means it'll more than like have a heavy PA element to it. As a huge fan of Kurosawa, I must say this news comes as a swell surprise on a slow Friday.
