I will readily admit, I wasn't a huge fan of The Machine Girl, but with a crowd at a fest it was quite enjoyable. Not so with Tokyo Gore Police. I found it humdrum and boring, and was secretly hoping it would end quick. This is odd considering I'm a fan of gore, but the thin storyline and the poor cut-scene photography really turned me off. The action was nothing more then a comic book, shifting panels and seriously disturbing the flow.


The story revolves around Ruka, a Tokyo Police Corp officer who is considered a "model hunter". What does she hunt? Strange humans called "Engineers" who not only have the ability to get shot countless times (spraying blood and all) and keep ticking, but if any part of the body is cut off it fuses with a weapon, say a chainsaw, and becomes part of their body. These creatures are hard to kill, but each has a weak point, an organic "key" in their body which if severed, kills the host.

Ruka's father was a policeman, and while shot in the head and killed quite gruesomely, she still ended up in the same profession, but with a propensity for cutting herself. This follows along with the old storyline that the best are always a bit off. Tagging along her troubled past, Ruka is trying to find out who is responsible for the engineers, and the closer she gets, the closer it seems to relate to her own life.

I'll breakdown the gore a little, it's over the top and mushy. Like a corpse defrocked of its bones and stuffed in a little box. Heads get sawed off by a chainsaw in all the best places, including the mouth, and it's slow too. Ruka cuts off the hands of a pervert with her samurai sword at one point to reveal beautiful fountains of blood, and she saunters away holding an umbrella. There's a LOT of spraying blood even to the point the camera gets covered, and more then is realistically contained in a human body.

There's quite a bit of comedy in the film to go along with Ruka's somber nature, but in the end I have to say I can't recommend this unless you're looking for some cheap laughs. You might be saying this is heresy me giving a cult film such a poor review, but it just doesn't do it for me. The only saving graces were the gore and the hot Japanese girls.

I was hoping you could post your review of the Tokyo Gore Police on Rotten Tomatoes. The reason being is that although none of the reviews it received where perfect it got a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes because none of the reviews were negative.

Rotten Tomatoes judges on how many positive reviews a film receives instead of the score it's self. It's just that I feel it's unfair how Rotten Tomatoes judges films on the number positive reviews instead of the scores they receive.
