Putting together a comprehensive documentary about the life and far reaching effects of Roger Corman's loooong career would be a lot tougher than it sounds but that's exactly what Alexandra Stapleton's upcoming King of the B's: The Independent Life of Roger Corman will try to accomplish. From 1950s youth counterculture, to AIP's Poe films, to the exploitation genre work of the 60s 70s and 80s, King of the B's will attempt to cover the writer/director/producer and sometimes actor's life all the way from the beginning of his career to his present efforts as a still independent producer. Says writer/associate producer Gregory Locklear about the project:

“The documentary will focus on Roger’s contributions to genre cinema, with horror/comedies like A BUCKET OF BLOOD and THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, sci-fi/action flicks like DEATH RACE 2000, straight horrors such as PIRANHA and sexploitation phenoms like CAGED HEAT. Our film focuses on these and other Corman classics that exploded the restrictions of low-budget filmmaking and popularized horror, science fiction and other hybrid genres in the true spirit of independent cinema.”

Of course many, if not most, of some of todays biggest names started their careers with Corman so expect to see interviews with Martin Scorsese, John Sayles, Jonathan Demme, Joe Dante, Gale Anne Hurd , Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich, Timur Bekmambetov, Pam Grier, Bill Carradine, David Cronenberg, among others. Fangoria's Michael Gingold broke the news and says that the production is shooting to be ready for next May’s Cannes Film Festival, and that a theatrical release will follow. Awesome.
