One of the films getting the most attention at AFM this year is undoubtedly Mortis Rex, a giant monster film set in Ancient Rome. The film will be written and directed by Hellboy co-writer Peter Briggs and go into development sometime in 2009. I guess "Mortis Rex" is Latin for "king of death." Here's the film's official logline:

"MORTIS REX" is an Ancient Rome monster movie. In 123 AD, a disgraced Roman war hero is sent to defend a Roman garrison stationed in remote Scotland from a spate of mysterious killings. The hero reclaims his rightful warrior status by uniting with the local Druids and vanquishing a terrifying supernatural beast.
A terrifying, fantastical action movie in the vein of BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF.

An official website is up for the film, but you have to get a password to see most of the stuff. Based on what I'm hearing, this movie has the potential to be extremely cool in a 300 meets Cloverfield sort of way. We've got some more art and storyboards of the entire first sequence after the break.

Sounds like Beowulf/Eater of the Dead/13th Warrior.

Sounds really neat, though I hope its set in Caledonia with the Picts not Scotland with the Scots because that would require time travel...

Now if they can just get Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd and Ray Stevenson we'll be sorted.

Briggs is a pretty good writer. This could seriously rock. Color me excited!
