This is easily one of the best weeks for DVD releases we've seen in a long while in fact, as I write this, I realize that this post almost works to recap of a lot of the high points of last years cinematic offerings. So, I suggest you grab a coffee and take a few minutes to just digest all the great titles, read some of our past reviews, and look at some trailers before you take a trip through any of the amazon links and start browsing.
First and foremost, we've got Fernando Meirelles' somewhat controversial adaptation of Blindness (review) hitting store shelves. Many people LOVED this film ,and in a lot of ways I really like it as well. It certainly pulls no punches and all the actors are amazing (particularly Julian Moore) but there was still something about the movie that felt unfinished and small (not "intimate" mind you, but small). For fans of Meirelles' work, the book, or just fans of apocalyptic cinema it still comes highly recommended though.
Also out this week is Bruce Campbell and Mark Verheiden's My Name is Bruce (review) a hilarious, if somewhat broad, comedy/horror that spoofs the life and work of "The Chin" Bruce Campbell. I had the pleasure of being at Canada's only screening of My Name is Bruce and the atmosphere was certainly riotous. Not the second coming of Evil Dead many fans hoped for but very much a step up from The Man with the Screaming Brain.
Two indie horror films are also being released today that should be worth a look. Irish/French thriller Dorothy Mills, directed by Agnès Merlet, I haven't seen but was definitely entranced by the film's trailer last summer. Also, Anchor Bay's release of Paddy Breathnach's Red Mist, (formerly Freakdog) is out today. I thought Shrooms was not bad so I think I'll check this one out.
And that's not all folks! Not by a long shot. Also out this week is Bruce la Bruce's extremely controversial existential gay arthouse zombie piece Otto; Or Up With Dead People (review), Thai martial arts favorite Chocolate, Steven Seagal's post-apocalyptic samurai vampire pot-boiler Against The Dark, season one of TV's Tales from the Darkside and a brand new edition of Street Fighter with Jean-Claude Van Damme (that's right, you heard me).
