This outtake footage from director Elijah Drenner's forthcoming documentary on the strange, wild and seedy underbelly of American exploitation cinema, American Grindhouse, is important because it may be the last interview with legendary cult director, Ray Dennis Steckler (The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!?, Blood Shack) who just passed away last month January 7, 2009. If anything speaks to the importance of such a documentary, and others like it, being produced I think this does.

AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE examines the American exploitation movie market of the 1960s and 1970s as seen through the eyes of it's creators. From the urban grindhouse theaters in New York to the car-crammed drive-ins of Peoria - audiences will witness the birth of this amazing period of motion picture history.

Steckler was hardly the greatest director, but his passion and sardonic sense of humor speaks volumes about the kind of outsiders who made these kinds of crazy cult movies. American Grindhouse comes out from Lux Digital sometime in 2009. Can't wait.
