Word from scifiwire (syfywyre?) is that the network has made the strange decision to greenlight a new two part mini-series based on the "Riverworld" novels by the late Phillip Jose Farmer. Why is this strange you ask? Well, because they already made a mini-series based on the Riverworld novels in 2003. That production failed to ignite any interest in a Riverworld series so it seems odd that they would try again.

I only bring this up because I actually sort of liked the first Riverworld book as well as the first mini-series and would love to see it brought to the small screen again. It has a fantastic premise and could easily be popular if the makers gave it a Twilight Zone meets LOST sort of vibe. However, the new mini is being directed by Stuart Gillard (90210) and written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) so the jury is still out about what it could potentially be like.

The River World is the perfect stage. Any historical figure can be used and put up against anyone from any time, all in this bizarre world with its own autopoietic rules (grail slaves, frex) and cobbled technology. The tv movie from a few years ago was painful, but I hope the series manages to do it right.

Robert Hewitt Wolfe is a very good writer. If anyone could do the series right, he can.
