I'll admit that, until today, I hadn't heard of Manuel de Pedrolo or his 1974 alien apocalypse novel, "Second Origin Typescript" (Mecanoscrit del segon origen) but it's one of the most broadly distributed Catalan fiction books ever and is apparently considered quite a masterpiece. The synopsis is certainly intriguing:

A white girl Alba (14) and a black boy Didac (9), are the only survivors on the Earth after they accidentally survive an alien holocaust that eradicates all life on the planet.

As Alba and Dídac bravely recover from the catastrophe, they not only insist on living in a post-apocalyptic world, inhabited by myriads of corpses and deranged, psychotic survivors, but they also take up the mission of preserving human culture and repopulating the Earth. They must start a new world. A "Second Origin." There are only two survivors. Now, our future depends on them.

I wish I could say the project is well under way but it's currently in the development stage with Spanish director Bigas Luna (Sound of the Sea) attached to direct. However, we do have a nice piece of early concept art for you after the break so be sure to check that out.

I've translated the book from Catalan into English, Planeta is currently negotiating with English-speaking publishing houses.
