Ah hell yeah!!! Man, I've been waiting for a decent R1 DVD release of Nikolai Lebedev's Wolfhound (Волкодав из рода Серых) for well over a year so please excuse that gratuitous use of exclamations marks. Actually no, I apologize for nothing!

One of the first in the recent wave of big budget Russian adventure films, Wolfhound is based on the first novel in a tetralogy by writer Maria Semyonova and was, I think, intended to be trilogy. So far however, there's been no announcement of whether or not we'll see more episodes in the Wolfhound series.

Synopsis:
The last remaining member of a slaughtered tribe pursues vengeance against all odds for his family’s murder. When he discovers his target is a brutal, Sauron-like tyrant, his personal quest grows into an all-out war to rescue a nation and exact revenge.

There's not a ton of information on this R1 release of the film arriving August 4, 2009, but we know it'll be 136 minutes and include a subbed as well as dubbed version of the film. There better be a frickin' subbed version anyway.

Pre-order a copy of the DVD.

Check out the film's trailer after the break.

this looks a little like 'pathfinder' meets 'outlander'. both movies i liked, so i guess i'll be seeing this!

I saw this, and it's very heroic and extreme, it's so damn serious all the time. Everything in the movie is life or death, so it is really exhausting to watch. I think it's much better than Outlander, if only because it's not that stupid. But unless you like ultra heroic fairytale epics with Light vs Darkness theme - you better skip it. It's also no LOTR.

i saw this ages ago and yep its very epic. but it did remind me of LOTR a lot (the sort of supernatural horseriding enemies) but it was gd stuff defo. couldnt find any gd english subtitles at the time so watched it with german ones, which was a lot better.

My favorite fantasy movie, largely because the Good vs. Evil elements are steeped in Russian mythology. It is very serious, but Alekander Bukharov makes a great sullen warrior and his trials are fun to watch. There was a tv mini-series with Bukharov called Young Wolfhound which is all region NTSC but NO English subs. Regardless, the best fantasy film I've seen in a long time.
