Wow, we didn't see this one coming. The third film from Argentinian director Luis Ortega, The Dirty Saints is having it's world premier at TIFF and is described as an "apocalyptic film which follows a group of five survivors as they embark on a journey that will force them to face their fears, dreams and longings in their quest for salvation across the Fijman River." The first still, of a girl in the back of a car, reminds me of 1984. The second, a canned corned beef sign with dead people all around looks like a post apocalyptic version of a Weird Al dream. I'm already salivating.

A city in ruins. It may be the end of a war, or the end of an era. A group of survivors gets together to try to escape. There's Rey, a skeptical businessman fallen into disgrace. El Mudo, who has chosen not to speak, but who keeps for himself the secrets of music. Berry, an Indian looking man who lives in a church dome, and carries the last traces of a long lost romanticism. Cielo, a paranoid and amoral teenager who worships Rey. Monito, an abandoned child in the search for love. And Brian, a kid still innocent after his parents slaughter.These characters begin a journey that will face them to their own fears, dreams and longings, with an ending yet to be known.

Looks promising. It's a shame that foreign dramas seem to get all the attention, and genre films (unless they're heavy on action) are forgotten/unacknowledged.
