The trailer for Starz Entertainment's new cable TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand is here via our pals at cinemabeacon and I must say I'm totally sold on it. It looks like it's got all the epic qualities of Gladiator blended with the smarts of HBO's Rome and all stylized in a bold 300 style sepia drenched aesthetic. It's also violent as hell and full of more sex than a Deadwood saloon.

Synopsis:
Betrayed by his country. Beaten into slavery. Reborn as a warrior. "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" is a graphic and visceral account of Rome’s most famous gladiator.

When he’s separated from the love of his life, Spartacus is forced into the gruesome and bloodthirsty arena, where a grisly death is primetime entertainment. Spartacus must fight for survival, befriend his enemies and play politics in this new world of corruption, violence, sex and fame. He’ll be seduced by power and tormented by vengeance. But his passion will give him the strength to prevail over every obstacle, in this modern and uninhibited tale of death, honor and endurance.

The show, which premiers in January 2010, is produced by Sam Raimi and stars Andy Whitfield in the titular role alongside genre tv favorite Lucy Lawless and John Hannah. Thank you Starz!

This looks rather ****ty. And what's with all those slow-mo blood sprays - that stuff is getting old fast.

Slow mos every 3 seconds? It's a trailer, people. You know they cut up a bunch of action sequences and string them together. You can't judge the action scenes by what you see in a trailer, other than some basic stylistic cues.

Was that the Persian king dude from 300? Ya, can never have enough blood... The trailer is pretty porno :)

I'm far more concerned by the 100% CGI arena backgrounds than by slo-mo.

Good to see Andy Whitfield in this, he hasn't done much since Gabriel (2007) but I liked him in that.
