Poor English speaking Solomon Kane fans. First Michael Bassett's beautiful and painstakingly constructed trailer for Solomon Kane leaks in poor quality, and now it premieres... in Russian. But worry not folks. We've just spoken with Bassett and he's assured us an English trailer is right around the corner.
The Solomon Kane adaptation has been on my radar for almost two years now so you can imagine how thrilled I am to be completely in love with what we're seeing here. Remember folks, Bassett's a newcomer to epic fantasy, but based on what I've been reading on his blog, the man has everything well sorted in terms of what he expects from the genre. He wants to erase all thoughts of Van Helsing's bloated awkwardness and make the genre classy, gritty and worthy of serious critical attention again. And from what we've got here, I think it's safe to say the man has done just that.
This trailer originally premiered at comic-con and was met with some confusion by genre fans who wondered what the heck it was and why they had never heard of it. Since then it leaked in poor quality (much to the chagrin of the director himself who went on record saying he would rather have released a good copy), but now we at least have a Russian trailer we can look at properly. And it's a beauty.
The smattering of reviews that have surfaced from early screenings have all been raves, with particular attention paid towards James Purefoy's performance as Kane.
Still no release date on the horizon, but we know that the film is being shown at this year's Fantastic Fest and our boy quietearth gets to see it first hand. Lucky.
