"I wanted to make a film called Abel Cain which was the Son of El Topo but I could not raise the money. Too expensive. You know, I am a poor poet trying to make artistic, individual pictures. I am not a multinational." -- Alejandro Jodorowsky
The above quote appeared in an old interview from 2007 when things were looking grim for any new Jodorowsky project. Now, I'm not sure if it's because of Jodorowsky's new connection with David Lynch and their work on King Shot or if it's just because people still care about making seriously wacked out art cinema, but we're happy to report that Jodorowsky's dream project, Abel Cain, has found it's money and is in the early stages of pre-production.
Producers Arcadiy Golubovich and Olga Mirimskaya, along with the help of Parallel Films, are making it all happen.
Synopsis:
Upon the death of their mother, Abel and Cain embark on a journey to bury her holy body next to their father's grave on a forbidden paradise island. But the island's treasures attract numerous kidnappers with different plans.
Jodorowsky called Abel Cain "the son of El Topo," an obvious reference to his 1970 revisionist western. However, based on the above synopsis it's obviously not a sequel. Maybe a sequel in spirit but not in plot? Awesome news nonetheless. Now if only someone gave Jodorowsky the means to make his insane vision of DUNE become a reality...
