Portuguese cinema isn’t exactly world renowned. Sadly, few of the films produced in the small country see life on the outside and the few directors who are making an impact internationally are grossly under recognized at home. But there’s a new breed of filmmaker emerging; young, raw, uncompromising and suggesting that the country has more to offer than beaches, fado and great food.

João Salaviza second film, a short titled Arena, premiered and won the Palme d'Or at Cannes earlier this year. The story of a young man on house arrest, the 15 minute short stars Carloto Cotta as Mauro, the guy who fills his days Tattooing and dealing with the kids who taunt him through the window.

Salaviza’s first film, a short titled Two People (Duas Pessoas) which is available for viewing online, suggested talent but on the surface, it seems very different in visual style from his follow up which opts for bright and vivid color where Two People is dark. The films do share similarities, the most notable of which is the intimate approach to the stories and how both feel very personal. Arena is a definite step up for Salaviza and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next.

A teaser for the film has been kicking around the web for a few weeks but we’ve got a full length trailer after the break.
