Back when we first reported on Calvo's planned Lynchian Snow White adaptation, the news went far and wide, ending up on the AP wire. In the meantime, funding came through for The Melancholy Fantastic, the first in a trilogy of films "featuring a strong female lead character suffering from mental illness", which started shooting this past weekend, and now, we have the first incredible looking stills to show you. What's it about? Something wholly fantastic. Read on.

Against the objections of a life-size paper doll, a delusional young woman falls for a Goth in this unconventional holiday story. The Melancholy Fantastic weaves elements of classical existentialism into a disturbing psychological holiday thriller.

TMF stars Amy Crowdis, Robin Taylor (Assassination of a High School President), Josh Caras and Geneva Carr.

Check out the stills after the break!

Nice. I particularly like the second still there. There's something serene yet creepy about it (must be the look on her face).

I always get wary of indie filmmakers announcing their intent to make a trilogy when they can barely fund and finish the first film. Is there a business reason for this? Is it purely artistic? Why not just make the first film, and based on its merits, make another one?

Concept sounds terrific. If The Other Side of The Tracks is any indication of execution, I'll be first in line to see this. Plus with the sensibility of Misaku Shimizu editing, I have a feeling this will be a very cool film.
