We've just learned that Tales of an Ancient Empire will not be the next film released from director Albert Pyun. Rather Bulletface, Pyun's revenge fueled, scifi pot-boiler is expected to hit in late January while Tales heads into a final round of post.
Pyun is also telling us to expect something very different from the project: "Bulletface is a departure for me because of how gritty and hardboiled it is. Its a very taut horror/sci-fi film with a plot that twists and turns and it's more sexually explicit than my other films and is not for the feint of heart."
Victoria Maurette, who was in Pyun's Left for Dead plays Dara, a female DEA agent who, in protecting her petty criminal younger brother, gets arrested and imprisoned in a nightmarish penal colony outside Tijuana that's so brutal, prison officials even harvest organs from the inmates. While in prison, Dara's brother is murdered by a drug lord who's creating a new, DNA altering drug made from human spinal fluid tapped from the living.
When new drug addicts become something not-quite-human and hundreds of dead bodies turn up along the border, a rogue FBI agent bribes the prison officials to let Dara out to bring down the Drug Lord.
The catch? She only gets a 60 hour get-out-of-jail-card and must return to the prison to serve out her 20 year sentence or the rogue FBI Agent must take her place.
Steven Bauer who is best known for similar genre films like Scarface and Traffic co-stars with the always terrific Scott Paulin, Morgan Weisser, Jenny Dare Paulin, and Eddie Velez.
No trailer yet, but check out some pretty gritty, yet beautifully framed stills after the break... and p.s. we've got someting very special and very exciting coming from the Pyun camp in the new year. Something we hope hardcore PA and scifi fans will be excited to finally get their hands on. Stay tuned!

I don't say this often, but that film sounds amazing - part Resident Evil, part Crank, part Traffic? I'm in.

not that I'd know, but, the girl in pic # 7 looks a lot like porn star Jenaveve Jolie.

This is Albert Pyun's response, he can't get the website to take his comment.
The actress is adult star Jenaveve Jolie. Bulletface was stalled while Albert figured out how to accomplish the disturbing sexual scenes. Standard casting failed because it was too T & A instead of raw and real. Seeing Sasha Grey in The Girlfriend Experience opened his eyes to what adult actors might bring to the principal character's harrowing journey into a dark underworld. Jenaveve and the other actors made those scenes work.

Interesting. Thanks for the info Albert. I like when films go out of their way to break boundaries.
