Marina Antunes [Celluloid 01.20.10] Ireland (Republic of) trailer news thriller drama

I’ve been keeping a close eye on Conor McPherson's The Eclipse, a film which has been playing the festival circuit for months and which is due to make it’s North American premiere sometime soon. The reason I’m keeping a close eye on this film’s release is due to the gut reaction I had walking away from it at the Vancouver Film Festival. Though I enjoyed it (largely in part to the performances from Ciarán Hinds and Aidan Quinn), I found the film was a bit unsure of what it set out to be: a thriller or a romantic drama. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but I’m curious to see what the masses make of McPherson’s blending of genres, a blending that I found both works and to an extent, disappoints.

The story stars Hinds as a man volunteering at a local writers festival being attended by Lena, a prominent author of ghost stories (Iben Hjejle). The two strike up a relationship which suffers a blow when a Nicholas (Quinn), a big shot American writer, arrives on the scene.

The gorgeously shot film could be called a “mature person’s thriller.” That’s not a derogatory observation only the fact that it feels like a very high-brow, demure (if that’s possible) thriller. I’m looking forward to seeing if McPherson’s film is as dividing upon second viewing.
