With so many people in the world, all living different lives with different experiences, it's no wonder we have so many films about growing up. It can be a difficult time full of drama and emotion and regardless of how many “teen” films I delve into, I find that even the worst of the bunch carry some inkling of truth that reminds me of what it was like growing up in the burbs. David Robert Mitchell’s first full length feature The Myth of the American Sleepover, appears to be one of the good films.

Premiering at SXSW, Mitchell’s film interweaves the lives of four teens looking for love, adventure and the much coveted "iconic teenage experience" in the last night of summer. I guess no one told them that that experience is elusive because it’s often only apparent in hindsight.

What I love best about the trailer for Mitchell's film is that it seems to traverse the span of both popularity and kitchy cliques to get at the centre of what it is to be a teenager anywhere, even if the story takes place with a backdrop of Metro-Detroit. Frankly, this looks more "real" than the documentary American Teen.

Trailer after the break.

Looks pretty cool, reminds me a lot of my high school. Hopefully it's not super sappy like a lot of these movies turn out to be.
