“End of the World.” That’s a theme we’re familiar with here at Quiet Earth. It also happened to be this year’s International 48HR Film Festival theme and Johnny St. Ours’ entry, a 9 minute short called Outliers, just happened to be one of the great entries.
There are clues peppered throughout Outliers that hint at what’s going on but they’re perfectly interspersed to give you just a taste, enough to distract you from the action for a second to fill you in on the background. Partway through the mystery starts to clear a little and the result, though not as mysterious as originally hinted at, is a great short with darn effective use of editing. To boot, it’s a pretty nice looking short.
Not a bad package. Actually, it’s so nice that it’s made the cut as an official selection of Cannes 2010.
Full film after the break.

Great film! "Prosumer" cameras have come a looooong way! Inconsistent and irrational characters are delicacies to the French moviegoer so it was a shoe-in @ Cannes.

Nice piece the only thing that put me off was the AK-47’s or AK-74’s and maybe an SKS the Guards had, any guards would have American weapons. Minor to some people any Vet or anyone with knowledge of firearms that will leap out at them.

Great film. The fact it was executed in 48 hours is even more amazing. I also thought the lead actress, Mendy St.Ours, did an amazing job. She should be acting in "A" films. Very talented.

I found the premise unbelievable, but loved the execution. Would love to see more from this crew!

This film was not an official selection at Cannes 2010. For a list of the official selections, please see http://www.festival-cannes.com/en/archives/2010/allSelections.html.
Sadly, one individual tangentially connected to this film has been misrepresenting this film's status at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival in order to promote himself.
This post is to set the record straight. Fact checking is important even if "We're fans first, journalists second." True fans have integrity and care about factual accuracy, particularly with regard to something as prestigious as being an official selection for the Cannes Film Festival.
