Describing something as “Lynchian” has become so cliché that I cringe, if only a little, at the mere writing of the word but in truth, no other film or trailer I’ve seen in the last few years has come as close to my first experience with Eraserhead as this trailer for indie filmmakers Albert Birney and Jon Moses’ The Beast Pageant.
I’ll admit it: I don’t get it. I don’t know what Abe, the lead, is doing or why never mind trying to understand what this story is about. Birney and Moses, who also wrote this story, describe it like this:
The film is about a man who goes on an adventure. The main character Abe lives in a city. His apartment consists of a bed, a sink and a giant machine. One thing leads to another and Abe embarks on an odyssey into the weird and wonderful.
They said it: weird. I add these other adjectives: surreal, fascinating and experimental. This is likely the strangest thing you’re going to see all year and if you’re interested in seeing how the story plays out, I encourage you to check out the film’s website and shoot the boys a bit of money. They’ve been working on this project since 2008 and are now in search for a bit of financial help to wrap up the production.
Trailer after the break.

This has shades of American Astronaut/Stingray Sam and Forbidden Zone to it. I'd give it a watch.

This movie was shown at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY to a standing room only crowd of people who are more than just college kids. You know - grown ups. It's not "Lynchian" at all. It's wonderful. It's beautiful. It's got the best soundtrack you've ever heard. It's fun. And it's the kind of thing that you only get to see once in a lifetime. If you EVER get a chance to do so on the big screen, do it.
You will not only not be disappointed, you will be enthralled. Anyone who judges the movie on the basis of the trailer is simply judging their own limitations.
