quietearth [Celluloid 08.05.10] post apocalyptic movie review news script

The exciting news that Soderbergh will be tackling our favorite genre has been around for a few months, but now the folks over at scriptshadow have gotten their hands on a copy of the script and put out a review, and according to them he'll be going for a "cinema verite, documentary approach" which I dig.

Here's how it starts off (or at least that's what they make it sound like:
It’s Thanksgiving week. Beth Emhoff is coming back from work in Hong Kong. At O’Hare airport, she begins to feel sick.


Li Fai, a worker at a casino, is heading to Hong Kong on a ferry. He, also, is feeling weary.

Irina, a Ukrainian model, doing her best to push through a photo shoot, feels like she’s going to pass out.

I know, it sounds like the beginning of so many other films, and from what I can tell there's nothing to seperate it from the likes of Fukkatsu no Hi or that terrible Dustin Hoffman film except Soderbergh himself. In fact, the folks over at scriptshadow didn't like it too much, but if you want to read more, go here!

Sounds bloody amazing, actually, as long as it goes all the way with a truly realistic portrayal of what it an outbreak like this would really be like. Every once in a while it's nice to be treated like an adult instead of a drooling, idiotic child by movie makers. What I can't understand though is if he's going for a third-person narrative, documentary kind of approach, why use big name stars? Why not use no names, which would better suit the documentary approach?

Simply because it's easier. Finding unknown people who can act can be tricky and stars always attract attention to the films there in.

I’m very, very skeptical some scripts usually go though dozens of rewrites before they start production. This has already been done The History Channel did Surviving Armageddon, it was based of the same thing in the same style but had commentary from “Experts” (Some sounded rational, others had ideas that where really helpful). I would highly recommend Surviving Armageddon if you haven’t seen it. What I took away from the show is if your at home and the power fails you’ve been there to long.
