Word is that BBC4 will be airing a 60 minute pilot come autumn/winter which is based in part on Douglas Adams first novel in the Dirk Gently series. Written by Howard Overman (creator of Misfits and Vexed), the story revolves around "solving the disappearance of a cat from an old lady’s house". Yes, it's only a pilot but from what BC says, if numbers are big enough they'll be more to come. I hope so. I can remember reading this first book as a teenager and being quite wary as I didn't think it could even remotely live up to Hitchhikers Guide but was more then pleasantly surprised.

For those who've missed this, here's a rundown of the first book via Amazon:
There is a long tradition of Great Detectives, and Dirk Gently does not belong to it. But his search for a missing cat uncovers a ghost, a time traveler, AND the devastating secret of humankind! Detective Gently's bill for saving the human race from extinction: NO CHARGE.

It's been a long time, but I remember some crazy suicide involving a record player. Was that in the first book?

The record player death is in the second and actually wasn't a suicide. He merely arrives late to meet a client and finds the client's decapitated head on a record player. When the police arrive they tell Gently he can have his client's fee if he can explain (rationalize) how the decapitation could be a suicide for them. That's the kind of crazy black humor I fear a tv show won't be able to adequately replicate.

Dont forget about the Lorry (truck) driver who hasnt seen a dry day in a long long time, since unbknownst to him he is actually Thor the Norse storm god.

That's Rob something in "So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish" who's a rain god.

Thor is indeed in "The Long Dark Teatime Of The Soul", but doesn't drive any lorries as far as I can recall.
