WETA, the effects folks behind so many big blitzers, will be doing the FX for the upcoming indie supernatural WWII flick Panzer 88 which will be produced by Gary Kurtz and is written by Aaron Mason and James Cowan with some modifications from director Peter Briggs. Kurtz said the film is "a visceral, reality-based story with horror overtones, and the idea is to have be like the best of the graphic novels these days." What's it about?
The plot follows the five-man German crew of the Ilsa -- a King Tiger, the biggest tank of its day -- on a mission to the frigid and fearsome Russian border, where they tread into an ancient mystery by stirring a powerful entity.
Panzer 88 is an independent film budgeted at $20 million and will shoot this winter.

Just one thing - the King Tiger wasn't the "biggest tank of its day". Not by a long shot.

Sounds a little like the movie "The Keep". Sounds interesting. Looking foward to it.

The King Tiger was certainly the most powerful regular German tank deployed on the battlefield at this time. Russian tanks were ordered to disengage if one came onto their field of battle.
I am so, so stoked by this. There hasn't been a great tank battle movie since the late 60s. And this one's fighting the Balrog! :)

Um, King Tiger was a nice tank... but you have to work on the definition. Do you count Tank hunters (No turret) as a tank? If not, then the King Tiger was a big tank, but the Mouse was bigger. (One might have been operational). In any case, the picture is NOT a king tiger, it is a standard Tiger.. (Trust me, I am a wargammer).

Hmm, had a closer look at the pic and some reference material.
The superstructure might be a Tiger 2, but the turrent (What I based my previous comment on) really looks like a Tiger 1.
The T2 turrent was all sloped, the T1 is straight verticle edges....

hehe, Just read an interview with the producers of Panzer 88. The Tank is a TII, it just has skirts on the turret as well as the side. As he pointed out, it might not be proven that TIIs wore skirts, but it hasn't been disproven either.
