Prudence is lost. At 17, she finds herself at home trying to recuperate from the sudden death of her mother. At first, she’s happy for the freedom and finds herself enjoying the chance to do what she wants and with her friend Marilyne in tow, they discover and immerse themselves in the underground racing scene. Here she finds distraction from her mother’s death by drowning herself in the noise and chaos of cars and motorcycles that drive around the track chaotically but when one of the regulars takes a liking to Purdence things turn ugly. She doesn’t share Reynald’s affections but they lead her to finally face the truth of her mother’s death.

Co-written and directed by Rebecca Zlotowski, her debut feature Dear Prudence (Belle Epine) has been described as a “classic auteur film” where minimalism allows the characters and complex emotions to permeate through the picture. The film, which was in competition at Canne’s Critics’ Week, has been quietly making its rounds through the festival circuit and will be making a stop in Vancouver come October. It was already high on my list to see and though the first clip for the film (sadly, sans subtitles) doesn't develop much of the plot, it is a good indicator of what we can expect: a minimalist teen drama.
