Marina Antunes [Celluloid 09.22.10] movie trailer news short fantasy

You may not yet recognize the name Mike Le Han but now may be a good time to get acquainted with it because he’s about to make the leap into full length features and it’s a leap that will very likely land him in sentences which include Guillermo del Toro.

A session musician who made the jump to tv and music video directing, Le Han is currently in the final editing stages of his first short film, a dark fantasy titled Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room. It’s the story of a young girl who gets more than she bargained for when she checks out some movement in the reading room of the shop across the street. There she meets Mrs. Peppercorn who shows her how magical the world can really be and though the trailer doesn’t outright show any magic, it’s eerie and dark, suggesting that it’s not all sugar plums and gum drops (not to mention that it features some spectacularly high quality production values).

The trailer is so impressive that it’s garnered the attention of a few studios and Le Han and his co-writer Helen Le Han (his wife) recently signed a co-production deal with Little Freddie Productions to develop a trilogy loosely based on the short film. Yes, much more to come from Le Han in the next few years.

The good folks at Screen/Read have a great interview with Le Han in which he discusses all aspects of the short and divulges a bit more detail on the full length adaptation and another short film project currently in the works.

The impressive first trailer is after the break.
