Actor/director Peter Mullan is one of my favourite British actors. He pops up everywhere, always in bit parts that always leaving me wanting for more. His feature film directorial debut eight years ago caught a lot of attention, winning the coveted Golden Lion at Venice and taking home the Discovery Award at TIFF.

Mullan has spent the better part of the last eight years in front of the camera while also working on a new script. The fruits of his work is NEDS (which we previewed a while back), a film which has been making the rounds through the festival circuit and recently took home the Golden Shell at San Sebastian. The film, set in 1973Glasgow, tells the story of an intelligent boy who turns into a NED (a non-educated delinquent) who, when he starts at a new school, becomes increasingly violent and aggressive and drawn towards the local gang culture.

The film shares some of the same themes as his debut The Magdalene Sisters though this time around his focus is the adolescent male rather than the female but if these first clips from the film are any indication, it’s a worthy follow-up.

Peter Mullan's directorial debut was not 8 years ago (I'm assuming you are referring to 'The Magdalene Sisters' - hie second feature film which he wrote and directed)...the first feature that he wrote and directed was 'Orphans' (1997) and won various awards...;-)

It was actually called 'My Name Is Joe' which won a tonne of awards.
