Duncan Jones made a really great film right out the gate. Moon (review) was universally liked for good reason: it’s a really solid sci-fi flick.

For a follow-up, it was announced that Jones would be going back to the sci-fi genre with a bit of a mystery twist. Source Code stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a soldier who wakes up in the body of a person who sees the explosion of a train. Those were the basics but a trailer has gone live and with it, we have a longer description:

When decorated soldier Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he’s part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. In an assignment unlike any he’s ever known, he learns he’s part of a government experiment called the “Source Code,” a program that enables him to cross over into another man’s identity in the last 8 minutes of his life. With a second, much larger target threatening to kill millions in downtown Chicago, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack. Filled with mind-boggling twists and heart-pounding suspense, Source Code is a smart action-thriller directed by Duncan Jones (Moon) also starring Michelle Monaghan (Eagle Eye, Due Date), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Departed), and Jeffrey Wright (Quantum of Solace, Syriana).

It feels like it borrows from lots of material but I really enjoyed Moon and Duncan shows great talent. I’m hopeful that he bring something original to this story.

Trailer after the break.

Script seems pretty smart. Like a time travel flick without the time travel. Cyperpunk in tone. Also reminds of 12 monkeys. Looks like a win to me.

Sad to say this looks very weak considering how good the script was. Is this another case of the lead actor directing themselves as per Duncan's last movie? If so, this time it won't work out. Shame. Bloody good script.
