Over the past few months, Canadian director Ed Gass-Donnelly’s crime thriller Small Town Murder Songs has been making quiet stops in the festival circuit and along the way, picking up quite a bit of positive buzz. Screen Daily compared it to early Coen Brothers and from the look of this trailer, I can see where the comparison comes in.

The film stars the fantastic Peter Stormare as Walter, an ageing police officer in a small Ontario Mennonite town who hides a violent past. His new life begins to unravel when the dead body of a young woman is discovered. Along with Stormare, the film also stars Sebastian Pigott, Jill Hennessy and Martha Plimpton.

I’m generally a fan of Stormare’s work, even in the less than stellar films, but he looks fantastic here and this trailer, I’m not even sure where to start. I love the comedy, I love the setting, I love the music… it just works. Here’s hoping it sees life after the festival circuit.

Trailer after the break.
