I love films about families coming together. The good ones (The Celebration anyone?) are usually ripe with unspoken tension that eventually explodes and when handled well, they make for the best entertainment. It’s like watching a family self destruct and re-emerge as a stronger, more cohesive group though sometimes, it just ends badly. I’m not quite sure which way Joanna Hogg’s Archipelago is leaning but either way, it looks like one to watch.

Hogg garnered quite a bit of attention when her 2007 film Unrelated took home the FIPRESCI Prize at the London Film Festival and for a follow up, the director is tackling family dynamics with a story of a young man who returns to spend the holidays with his mother and sister on the Isles of Scilly.

It’s amazing to me that a trailer which on the surface seems so unremarkable can squeeze in so much of the tortured, underlying tension within this family. As for the title? It’s a little obvious (particularly when its defined at the end of the trailer) but quite brilliant.
