agentorange [DVD News 01.17.11] movie news dvd



One of my favorite films of the year, Buried, finally hits on DVD/Blu ray combo pack. Unfortunately it comes in a little light on the special features with only a making of featurette. I've seen interviews with director Rodrigo Cortés and he seems really passionate about the vision he put up on the screen, so I think a commentary with him and Reynolds would have a been really amazing. Ah well, still a great film.

Also out this week is a strange little spiritual prison film from NuImage called Stone. I saw this one in the theatre not knowing anything about it and was impressed with the performances from Robert Deniro and Edward Norton and how different the story was. It's also probably the best I've seen Milla Jovovich ever. Seriously, that girl can act!


One film I'm really excited to check out is David Michôd crime drama Animal Kingdom (review) which has been getting tons of buzz.

Takers was a film that got a lot of attention prior to release and then I didn't much once it came out. It looks like your standard heist flick and stars Matt Dillon, Hayden Christensen, Chris Brown, Idris Elba and Michael Ealy.

And of course how could we forget Death Race 2, the direct to video (pre)sequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race remake. If you missed the first one, you can even pick up both together for a decent price.

Last but certainly not least is British crime flick Down Terrace which is being described as "The Sopranos" if imagined by Mike Leigh or Ken Loach. Featuring a cast you'll recognize from British TV shows like "Spaced," "The Office" and "Extras," the film is a black comedy that alternates unexpectedly between shocking violence and realistic, even moving family drama. This may be the first film I track down this week.
