agentorange [Celluloid 02.02.11] post apocalyptic movie short scifi video dystopic

If you were a child of the early 80s, chances are you watched Rolf Forsberg's post apocalyptic short, ARK, in science class. And if you were young enough like I was, it left an indelible impression on you and you'd just love to see it's breathtaking 1970s bleakness all over again.

Synopsis:
Set in a near-future Earth where the atmosphere is so polluted that most species are extinct and humans must wear gas masks outdoors, one man finds a pond with some small breath of life left in it, builds a greenhouse around it, and delicately but diligently tries to bring it back to life.

Father of Mega Piranha director, Eric Forsberg, Rolf's history as a film and theater director is a little less schlocky. He is most known for directing such films as the award winning Parable and the very odd STALKED which has been described as "Carnival of Souls for Christ." But ARK is my favourite of his films.

This, my friends, is why I love the internet.

I don't remember seeing this one, and will have to finish watching it later, but it made me think of another short film I remember seeing in grade school in the late seventies. Not necessarily PA, but in it, it rained constantly except for one day every several years or so. It showed kids in a classroom setting and on the day that the sun was to come out, a bunch of kids locked one of the other kids in a closet or locker and forgot about them. They all ran outside and played and enjoyed the sunny day. But when the rain started again and they came back inside, they realized that they had forgot to let the one kid out of the closet. It wasn't going to be sunny again for several years and they realized they robbed that kid of the experience. Or something like that.

Anyone remember that one?

It's called "All Summer in a Day" based on the Ray Bradbury story - and yeah, it's another weird, sad classic.

70's Propaganda....they, the human public school system, told us the earth would be depleted of oil by the early 90's, and another ice age was soon to come. On the other hand God gave us this planet to live on, the resources to use, the brains to take care of it, and his son, Jesus Christ, so that we may have salvation and everlasting life.
