Marina Antunes [Celluloid 02.04.11] movie news documentary



If I’m having a particularly crappy day, and there seem to have been quite a number of those lately, there’s a sure-fire way to perk myself up: Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen. Now pull your head out of the gutter, we’re not talking kinky sex or anything. What I am talking about is hard rock documentaries – some of the best. Ever.

For the uninitiated, Dunn and McFadyen first arrived on the scene in 2005 with Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, a comprehensive introduction to the world of metal. Dunn, an anthropologist, put his two passions (music and anthropology) to good use and the resulting doc was entertaining and informative while not bloated with information. They followed it up a few years later with a second documentary, this one on fans of heavy metal throughout the world and the result, Global Metal was an introduction to not just fans of the music but new forms of metal which have developed in various parts of the world. Let me digress further by saying that if you’re a Rush fan and haven’t already seen last year’s Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage you should really rectify that - is all sorts of awesome.

That’s quite a pre-amble but now onto the good stuff. Turns out that Dunn and McFadyen are returning to their anthropological roots with a documentary on the entity that shrouds much of heavy metal culture: Satan. Simply titled Satan (seriously, what more do you need?) the film will “look at the historical origins of Satan, how he's become a symbol of evil and his influence in art and music.”

SOLD.

Satan’s not scheduled for release until 2013 but I’m already looking forward to it.

And just for the hell of it…

Don't forget the Iron Maiden documentary. Really looking forward to Satan.
