Marina Antunes [Celluloid 02.15.11] Thailand trailer news action comedy

Generally speaking, Thai action flicks don’t do much for me. I watched Ong bak because everyone was raving about Tony Jaa’s jaw dropping action sequences and that’s really the only thing the movie had going for it. I’ve since delved into a few more and they’re all essentially the same: wicked action drowning so deep in impenetrable story that it doesn’t make any sense. I assume a large part of this has to do with the fact that I’m not familiar with the culture but as much as I love a good fight sequence, I generally need a little more. I’m not sure The Microchip will provide that but a film that introduces a dude that could well be the next Tony Jaa is worth mentioning.

The guy in question is Simon Kook (or Cook depending on where you look) and he stars in this action comedy about a guy in search of a microchip which has been taken by what appear to be mobsters. I wish I could give you more but my Thai is non-existent and finding information on this puppy is proving harder than my Muay Thai skills have to offer.

The inter-cards look like they were cut together by a kid on his lap top and the film footage is clearly low budget (the punch sound effects sound like they were pulled from a cartoon) but the action sequences are pretty impressive even if as a whole, the project looks pretty terrible. Chances we’ll get to see this? Slim to none (and after seeing the extended cut of the trailer I’m not sure you’d want to) but hey, in a year's time when everyone’s talking about this dude that’s kind of like Tony Jaa but even more kickass, you can play the upper hand and tell them you knew all about it last year.

Trailer after the break.

This compares to Tony Jaa as Jean Claude Van Damme compares to Bruce Lee.

Their sound guy needs to be punched so he knows what punches actually sound like.

Sorry, but this looks like complete crap.
