According to Deadline, Fox 2000 has set Cloverfield's Matt Reeves up with directing duties on the long in-development adaptation of vampire apocalypse novel "The Passage." The film, based on the popular novel by Justin Cronin, is being produced by Riley Scott's Scot Free Productions.
The book is about an experiment that goes awry and creates a swarm of bloodthirsty vampires that brings the world to the brink of extinction and is said to be close in tone to 28 Days Later and Stepehen King's "The Stand"
Fox acquired the book in 2007 for around $3 million right after Cronin made a 3-book deal with Ballantine for $3.75 million based on the first 400 pages of the book and an outline for a novel series.
Matt Reeves is of course the director Cloverfield (review) and more recently the somewhat controversial remake, Let Me In (review).
You can order The Passage here.

How is that book cover not a Night of the Living Dead rip off?

Synopsis:
"When a secret project to create a super-soldier backfires, a virus leads to a plague of vampiric revenants that wipes out most of the population. One of the few bands of survivors is the Colony, a FEMA-established island of safety bunkered behind massive banks of lights that repel the virals, or dracs—but a small group realizes that the aging technological defenses will soon fail. When members of the Colony find a young girl, Amy, living outside their enclave, they realize that Amy shares the virals’ agelessness, but not the virals’ mindless hunger, and they embark on a search to find answers to her condition."

I've read this book. I couldn't put it down it was that good. Highly recommended if you love PA and vampires!!!!

One of the worst books I ever read, except for the first few hundred pages (before the vampires). Has truly not one original thing or interesting idea inside of it.
Finished it only in the vain hope that it would become interesting. It did not and I wasted my time reading this crap...
Can't see how this can become a cool movie, but who knows.

I agree with Mirik completely, this book really pissed me off because it stole from every decent horror novel and read like it was written by committee. It also has one of the most bloated midsections - about 300 pages where secondary, unimportant characters take center stage and nothing happens. Sad and telling that it was purchased for so much money.
