Miike attacks Cannes in a couple of weeks with yet another samurai epic called Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai which is a remake of the 1962 film by Masaki Kobayashi.

Synopsis:
The story centers on Hanshiro (Ebizo Ichikawa), an honorable, poverty-stricken samurai requesting to commit hara-kiri in the courtyard of feudal lord Kageyu’s estate. Trying to dismiss Hanshiro’s wish to save face, Kageyu (Koji Yakusho) recounts the tragic story of a similar plea years ago from young ronin Motome (Eita). But the arrogant lord is unaware of vengeful Hanshiro’s bond to Motome.

A brief trailer has hit the nets and while it doesn't look like quite the kickass samurai smack down as his latest critically acclaimed 13 Assassins (which you can watch instantly here), it does look smartly lensed.

So what do you think

This is my fave Samurai film. I'm happy to see Miike is keeping things interesting since this Samurai film is pretty demure compared to 12 Assassins. We'll see what he brings to the table but it certainly looks promising. I just hope I have the opportunity to see it NOT in 3D.
