Carl Tibbets might be a green director but he must be doing something right because the script for Retreat, which he co-wrote with Janice Hallett, attracted the talents of Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton and Jamie Bell.

Martin (Murphy) and Kate (Newton), are headed to a remote island to spend some time together and try to piece their relationship back together after a family tragedy (ah, Eden. I'm having flashbacks to Antichrist (review)) but their time of peaceful reconnection comes to an abrupt end with the unexpected arrival of a man (Bell) who washes up on shore. He tells them that an airborne disease is spreading through Europe killing everyone in its wake. Martin believes him, Kate keeps crying she wants to go home and the mysterious man starts causing all sorts of trouble.

So you've got the potential end of the world, Jamie Bell playing a crazy man (yes!) and Murphy trying to protect his wife. I can see how this would have caught the eye of this cast. A film with only three characters could go south quickly if one of them doesn't deliver and I'm guessing the breaker here will be Newton who fluctuates from good to awful; we were already excited for the production and the trailer shows excellent promise.

Sony Pictures has acquired North American distribution for Retreat but no release date has been set.

Spiffy trailer after the break.

No comments yet?? This movie looks great! It'll be nice to see roles reversed with Murphy as the hero and Bell as the nut (unless of course they switch it up on us - I wouldnt be surprised if that happened). Looking forward to this one!
