Man oh man. The recent announcement that Jodorowsky's Dune would be seeing the light of day in the form of a documentary, has taken both the sci-fi geek world and arthouse film fans on a rollercoaster ride. There are those who can't wait to see what Jodorowsky had planned for his failed project and others who think the director is a pretentious artist who squandered away a great opportunity.
I straddle the middle; I'm a fan of Jodorowsky's but the bits that have emerged from his failed production really seem like he wasn't interested in creating an adaptation of Herbert's story but simply taking bits and pieces to create his own unique vision. I have no problem with that but must admit I'd have been pretty pissed if I’d gone in to see the movie only to find hints of the original story.
Either way, Twitch have dug up a promo video for the doc which features Jodorowsky talking about his vision for Dune and it's pretty spectacular, both in a "I can't believe he was going to mess it up so badly" and a "If only!" sort of way. And man, what I wouldn't give to get my hands on that book he's flipping through.
Promo after the break.

The problem with hearing someone's mission statement is that it doesn't give any indication whatsoever of the concrete product that may have been produced. Look forward to seeing what creative things he came up with in pre-pro though.
For me he's already achieved in all his subsequent films what he wanted his Dune to be; an acid trip. He should have no regrets!

It's easy to say that you want create a 'cinematic god', doing it is another, obviously Jodorwsky couldn't and the film didn't get made. He's all talk when it comes to this rhetoric.

Jodorowski is such a visionary. If he had planned to make Dune, in this day and age, with 200+ million dollars it would have been something else.
It would've made no sense, been a complete flop at the box office, and likely gone down in history as one of the greatest cult oddities of all time.

Are you saying that it's 'worth' that? Visionary is a word thrown around far too easily, anybody can be visionary if through words doesn't mean their vision is particularly good.

I believe, he would have likely made a version that was more enjoyable than Lynch's version. It likely would have been more style over substance for the most part. Though he would have also had the freedom to do as he pleased, and would not have been held back by the constraints of studio's.
